The Rajasthan Education Department suspended the principal of a government school in Jaipur for hearing and speech-impaired students after they staged a protest about poor infrastructure and a lack of basic facilities, The Indian Express reported on Thursday.
On Wednesday, more than 100 students of the Government Seth Anandilal Poddar Senior Secondary School gathered outside the campus gate. Using sign language, placards and written messages, they alleged that repeated complaints against the mismanagement had gone unaddressed.
The students alleged that toilets were unhygienic, drinking water was in short supply, classrooms had cracked walls and parts of the building were in a dilapidated condition, The New Indian Express reported. They also complained about food in the hostel.
Some students claimed they had to pay to speak to their parents over the phone or to be taken to hospital. They alleged that there were too few teachers proficient in Indian Sign Language. The protesters also accused a male staff member of harassing female students, The New Indian Express reported.
The protest reportedly took place after plaster fell from a classroom ceiling and struck a student.
The school has 583 students, including 282 hostel residents.
Following the protest, education authorities conducted an inspection, after which the district education officer submitted a report recommending disciplinary action against those found responsible.
Principal Bharat Joshi was suspended with immediate effect, The Indian Express reported.
Disciplinary action was also initiated against a teacher and a Class IV employee.
