Meet Anthropic’s ‘first lady’ who dated Eric Schmidt and started a porn company

[ad_1]

You may have heard of Dario Amodei. The CEO of Anthropic seems to be in the news all the time. The impression is that Dario calls the shots at Anthropic and with an iron fist, no less. And while that may be true on the surface, fresh reports suggest his wife, Cami Clark, may have an equal—if not more—role to play in driving Anthropic to its goal of making Claude the one AI to rule them all. Thing is, Claude, which seems to know anything and everything most of the time, knows very little about Cami.

Cami Clark, it is slowly and surely being learnt, maintains a low profile. She doesn’t directly work for Anthropic, yet she is often spotted alongside Dario at high-profile events and conferences like the World Economic Forum at Davos. Even on a recent visit to India, for the country’s maiden AI Impact Summit, Cami was by Dario’s side. That is perfectly acceptable behaviour. Until this week, when separate reports from the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and the Information tried to put two and two together about Anthropic’s proverbial “first lady” putting out a gamut of information that is literally an eye-opener.

Given the buzz, it is only obvious for people to open Claude and check for themselves or at least get some idea of who Cami is. Claude would know, right? Only, it doesn’t. Not enough anyway. When asked, Claude could only cite recent reports to give us bare basic information about Cami Clark. When probed if it could answer anything beyond these reports, it said, and we quote, “Honestly, the answer is: essentially nothing.” Strange but true.

So, who is Cami Clark?

As per reports, Cami Clark was born in Reno in the US state of Nevada in 1979. She reportedly began dating Dario Amodei in 2014 after a three-year relationship with ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

It is said that when Dario Amodei joined OpenAI in 2016, Cami served as his sounding board and strategic adviser. She reportedly introduced Dario to Eric Schmidt, who later visited the couple’s San Francisco apartment in 2018 and was impressed by their ideas, presumably on AI.

Later, when Dario Amodei, his sister Daniela and a bunch of other employees left OpenAI in December 2020 to start Anthropic, Schmidt would join Anthropic’s $124 million Series A round announced in May 2021.

A proposal Cami Clark made in early 2021 for a venture fund called the Mother of AGI Fund, which would have formalised her involvement in Anthropic, did not move forward after it was not backed by other co-founders, it is said.

It is believed that Cami Clark took on a public-facing role around Dario, speaking to investors and politicians at conferences and bringing them over to meet him, though she does not directly work for Anthropic.

What did Cami Clark do before meeting Dario Amodei?

Before meeting Dario, Cami Clark worked as an entrepreneur. Around 2010, she and Michelle Capocefalo reportedly started Eddice, which described itself as a “revolutionary porn company.”

As per reports, in 2011, she got introduced to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Emails released by the US Justice Department show Cami Clark and Epstein remained in contact till 2013 as she tried to get him to invest in her business. The released files do not indicate that Epstein invested.

Cami later moved into women-focused health technology, and reports suggest Eric Schmidt invested in one of her startups. She is also said to have worked with Mira Murati at Leap Motion and to have introduced Murati to OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman.

More recently, as Anthropic faced pressure from the Trump administration over restrictions on how Claude could be used by the Pentagon, Cami Clark is said to have told people in politics that the company saw its mission as protecting America.

As Anthropic heads towards a potential IPO, Cami Clark remains outside the company’s formal structure, but reports describe her as a central adviser whose influence contrasts with how little is publicly known about her.
