A case has been filed against a content creator in Madhya Pradesh’s Niwari district for using allegedly abusive language about former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Delhi Police in a social media post, The Hindu reported on Sunday.
Yashpal Soni was booked on Thursday after he posted a video on social media platform Instagram. He was questioned by the police in the matter following a complaint from BJP leaders, including the party’s block chief, the newspaper reported.
Soni was booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to obscene acts in public places that annoy others and intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.
Niwari Superintendent of Police Ray Singh Narwaria told The Hindu that the video was “way out of the purview of freedom of expression”.
The content creator used allegedly objectionable words in the video, Narwaria said, adding that “this is in no way freedom of speech and should not be promoted”.
The police officer claimed that Soni had “realised his mistake” and apologised for it. He also removed the video from the platform.
The video came amid the youth protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign to demand the resignation of Pradhan over the alleged irregularities in the conduct of competitive exams.
On July 20, thousands joined the protest in Delhi two days after the police forcibly took activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike for three weeks, to hospital. Their march to Parliament was met with a crackdown by the police. Dozens were injured as the police used lathis, fired tear gas shells and pellet guns against the demonstrators.
The police action turbocharged the agitation, which spread to other parts of the country and forced Pradhan to resign on Saturday.
More arrests in Bengal
Meanwhile, 14 persons, mostly Muslims, were arrested in BJP-ruled West Bengal for allegedly attacking police personnel and journalists during the protest against paper leaks in Kolkata on Friday, the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation said.
Cases have been filed against 70 persons, it added.
On Sunday, it was reported that 11 had been held under the recently-enacted 2026 West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Act, or the Goonda Act.
“Fearing the unity of people across religions that the student-youth movement has portrayed, and facing a challenge to its communal polarisation narrative, the BJP regime in the state has launched large-scale persecution of minorities and progressive activists,” the CPI(ML) Liberation said on Sunday.
Patna detentions
Nearly 200 protesters detained following protests in Patna between Wednesday and Saturday remained in police custody for more than 24 hours, The Times of India quoted lawyers as having alleged on Sunday.
The last batch of detainees were legally required to be produced before a magistrate by Sunday afternoon. Several persons detained are minors, the newspaper quoted advocate Akanksha Shahi as saying.
However, Patna Superintendent of Police Kartikeya K Sharma told The Times of India that 86 protesters arrested on Saturday had been remanded to judicial custody a day later. Sixty others, including minors, were released on personal bonds.
