Commonwealth Games: Neeraj Chopra bags silver for javelin throw, Yash Vir wins bronze

In chilly conditions hovering around 14 degrees Celsius, Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage produced a stunning second-round throw of 89.75m to seize the gold medal position, pushing India’s Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra (85.83m) into second place in the men’s javelin throw final of the Commonwealth Games at Scotstoun Stadium on Friday (July 31, 2026).

Neeraj made a best effort to take the silver medal, while India’s Yash Vir Singh won the bronze to secure his maiden Games medal with a superb performance in his sixth and final attempt. His throw of 85.41m earned him the bronze medal and was also a personal best. Rohit Yadav came seventh with an effort of 81.56m.

Pathirage, who came into the competition after Neeraj, effectively sealed the contest with his huge second-round throw. His celebrations suggested that he knew he had produced a mark that would be extremely difficult to surpass —and it remained untouched for the rest of the final.

After the Sri Lankan’s gold-winning throw, it took some time for officials to confirm the distance, with initial announcements suggesting that the throw could have been beyond 90m. Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished fourth with an effort of 83.88m.

Defending Commonwealth Games champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan endured a disappointing outing, failing to make the top eight after managing only 77.41m and finished ninth.

As Neeraj had pointed out after the qualifying round, the conditions were challenging for the throwers, and the final proved no different. The cold weather and difficult throwing environment tested even the world’s best.
