Daily drinking water supply to all wards in Thoothukudi Corporation from August 15, announces Mayor Jegan Periyasamy

Thoothukudi Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy on Friday said that daily drinking water supply would be implemented in all wards from August 15, and all drains in the city would be desilted before the onset of northeast monsoon.

Mr. Jegan made the announcement at the Thoothukudi Corporation Council meeting, held in the presence of Thoothukudi Corporation Commissioner S. Priyanka and Deputy Mayor S. Jenitta

Addressing the meeting, the Mayor stated that various development works had been carried out across all the 60 wards, including 24×7 drinking water supply currently being implemented in 10 wards on a trial basis. He added that steps would be taken to extend the project to all wards in phases.

Mr. Jegan explained that Thoothukudi has more than 375 drains, and desilting and cleaning works have already commenced. He assured that all drains would be desilted before the monsoon to ensure smooth flow of rainwater and prevent waterlogging. He also said that action had been initiated to replace 547 damaged streetlights and that other civic works, including the renovation of parks were under way.

During the meeting, the Council also unanimously passed 24 resolutions.

At the meeting, Councillors raised several civic issues, including the frequent closure of first and second railway gates, which they said was causing severe inconvenience to the commuters and students, and urged the Corporation to address the issue. They also sought uniform drinking water supply across all areas.

Responding to the members, the Mayor said that the feasibility of constructing a rail overbridge near the first railway gate would be examined. He added that measures had already been initiated to ensure regular drinking water supply to all areas.
