Her sexuality was questioned: Arjun Bijlani defends Mouni Roy amid dating rumours

Actor Arjun Bijlani has addressed for a second time the dating rumours linking him with Mouni Roy, saying there is no romantic angle to their friendship. The speculation around the two grew after they were seen at a recent dinner outing in Mumbai, and came after Mouni announced her separation from husband Suraj Nambiar.

In an interview with Telly Talk India, Arjun defended Mouni and said he felt compelled to respond after people close to them spoke up. He also said he feels someone has been trying to defame Mouni for some time, and added that she is already going through a difficult phase in her life.

Dismissing the rumours, Arjun said, “If seven or eight people are going for dinner, it’s not like we are going for the first time. We have gone out for dinner together 50 times. Mouni and I have also gone out for dinner and chilled together. So, I honestly don’t know why someone wrote that.”

He added that he had first chosen to ignore the reports, but changed his mind after seeing reactions from friends. “I initially ignored it, but I think Krystle (D’Souza) said, ‘What nonsense,’ because she knows me. People who know us obviously commented on the post. So I felt that if my friends were speaking up and I didn’t, it would be wrong,” he added.

Arjun also suggested that a targeted effort might be behind the recent gossip, stating he feels someone has been continuously trying to defame Mouni for quite some time.

He emphasised that she is currently navigating a difficult phase, pointing out how her “sexuality” was questioned earlier, adding, “First, there were some comments about her sexuality, then someone said something about her drinking. I mean, everyone goes to parties. Everyone enjoys themselves. That’s normal.”

Highlighting their long-standing friendship, Arjun shared that he and the Naagin actor go back a long way, cautioning against using such remarks to judge anyone’s character. He added that having worked and created content together for years, the two even shared a laugh over the link-up rumours.

In an earlier deleted Instagram note, Arjun had mentioned that it was disappointing to see a friendship of more than 15 years cast in a romantic light, particularly when, as he said, someone may simply be showing up for a friend during a difficult time. Arjun said the narrative being built around the dinner outing was false and unnecessary.

The rumours began circulating some time after Mouni Roy and Suraj Nambiar announced their separation. In a joint statement, they said, “We note with dismay the unnecessary and intrusive attention into our personal lives by certain quarters of the media. We would like to state that we have decided to part ways and are taking the necessary time to address matters privately and amicably (sic).”

The statement further said, “Attempts have been made to sensationalise our private lives by circulation of fictitious narratives and blatant falsehoods, which do not reflect the reality of our relationship. After thoughtful reflection on evolving personal priorities, we have mutually chosen to move forward on separate paths with respect and understanding. At this point, we are focused on navigating this phase thoughtfully and privately. We will endeavour to cherish our friendship in times to come. We sincerely appreciate your understanding, respect for our privacy, and the continued support extended to us during this time (sic).”

Arjun’s latest response again rejects the rumours around him and Mouni, while also backing his friend as she faces attention over her personal life following her separation.
