A woman died after the car she was driving plunged into a pond in Kolkata, on Wednesday morning.
The woman, Sumitra Das, a resident of Keshtapur, lost control of the steering while driving and fell into the pond at Prafulla Kanan Utsav Garden. The pond was 10 to 12 feet deep, causing the entire car to submerge in the water.
Many people witnessed the incident. Local residents immediately entered the pond and tried to rescue Das from the car, but their efforts failed. They informed the police and the fire department about the incident.
A police team and fire department personnel reached the spot and began a rescue operation. After nearly an hour of efforts, they used a crane to lift the car out of the pond. However, Das had already drowned while trapped inside the submerged vehicle.
The unconscious woman was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
According to local sources, Das had taken her daughter to school on a scooter earlier that morning. She then parked the scooter and began practising driving the car, as she did on other days. Locals said a driver accompanied her on other days, but she was alone on Wednesday when the car fell into the pond.
