U.P. Assembly session begins on stormy note; Opposition raises Ayodhya embezzlement issue, Yogi hits back

The opening day of Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s Monsoon session witnessed stormy scenes on Monday (August 3, 2026) as the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress legislators staged a protest in the Assembly premises, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of failing to act on the Ram Temple embezzlement case and demanding action over issues of examination irregularities, paper leaks among others.

The MLAs held posters reading, “Daan ka paisa kahan milega, BJP ke khate me“ (Donation money will be found in BJP’s account)”, while alleging that the ruling party is shielding real culprits of the embezzlement and attempting to suppress the truth in the Ram temple donation matter.The SP and Congress claimed devotees were losing confidence and sought a transparent investigation.

“Our MLAs will use the forum of the U.P. assembly to raise the concern of the general public. The BJP cannot run away from its responsibility, the core issues will be raised in the Assembly. Ram Temple embezzlement is a major issue as the BJP is protecting real culprits, similarly the issue of paper leak is central to the youth of Uttar Pradesh, we will raise it in coming days, the government of curtailed the duration of the Monsoon session to avoid debate on public issues,“ said Sunil Singh Yadav ‘Sajan’, the SP spokesperson. 

Speaking to the media outside the Assembly Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said those raising questions on the handling of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya had earlier attempted to obstruct the temple’s construction.

The U.P. CM accused the Opposition of displaying “double standards”. 

“Welcome to all the honourable members who have come to attend the Assembly session. This session is extremely important for us. The legislature is the most important medium for conveying the voice of the common people to the government and administration. If there is a single, most effective platform in the parliamentary system for discussing, reviewing, and bringing to fruition issues concerning the poor, farmers, youth, and women, it is the legislature. In the last nine years, through this dialogue, on the basis of plans made after reviewing the issues raised by the public representatives, we have been successful in bringing about comprehensive positive changes in the State,” added Mr. Adityanath. 

Inside the Assembly Mr. Adityanath expressed grief over the demise of sitting MLA Alam Badi. The Chief Minister also paid heartfelt tributes to 21 former members of the House. “Even at such an advanced age, Alam Badi’s political activism remained an inspiration for every public representative. His repeated election to the Assembly demonstrated that if a public representative remains dedicated to the people and the constituency, age becomes irrelevant. Alam Badi ji was a simple, humble, and people-centric leader who enjoyed immense public affection, said the U.P. CM.

“In Uttar Pradesh politics, he was known for his simplicity and spotless public image. He took a special interest in the upliftment of the poor and underprivileged, social welfare activities, and the promotion of education. He consistently raised the fundamental issues of his constituency in the Assembly. As a courteous and popular public representative as well as a social worker, he remained committed throughout his life to the development of his constituency and the welfare of its people. With his demise, the State has lost a capable politician and a dedicated social worker,” he added.
