Apple’s next generation iPhone 18 Pro models are likely to launch in India next month. While the company hasn’t revealed the launch date yet, but reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be introduced on September 9, just like the iPhone 17 series. And we should have an official announcement for it later this month or by the first week of September. Now, the bigger concern for buyers is likely the price.
There are rumours that the new Pro models could become significantly more expensive, with the price increase potentially reaching up to Rs 20,000. That could make the iPhone 18 Pro a difficult upgrade to justify, as the price might be much higher than the iPhone 17 Pro’s Rs 134,900 price tag. But there are also several reasons why buyers planning to purchase an expensive iPhone might want to wait before spending money on the current generation. Here are nine of them.
1. A more powerful chip
The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to get Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chipset, which could be one of the biggest upgrades inside the phone. The chip is reportedly being manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process, moving Apple beyond the 3nm technology used for the current generation. A smaller manufacturing process allows more transistors to fit into the chip and can improve both performance and efficiency.
Current reports point to around a 15 per cent performance improvement and up to 30 per cent better efficiency compared with the A19 generation. The A20 Pro could also use TSMC’s Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module technology, which is expected to bring RAM closer to the processor components.
For everyday users, the biggest benefit could be better sustained performance and battery efficiency rather than simply faster benchmark numbers.
2. iPhone 18 Pro Max to get much bigger battery
Battery life could be another major reason to wait, particularly if you are considering the Pro Max. Leaks suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max could have a battery of up to 5,567mAh in some markets, compared with around 5,088mAh on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Other reports have suggested a capacity of around 5,200mAh, so the exact figure is still unclear.
Either way, the direction appears to be the same that Apple could be putting a larger battery inside its biggest iPhone. The combination of a bigger battery, a more efficient 2nm processor and a potentially more efficient display could result in noticeably better battery endurance.
There may be a trade-off, though. A larger battery could make the iPhone 18 Pro Max slightly thicker and heavier than its predecessor.
3. Cleaner front look, but how?
The Dynamic Island may not disappear completely this year, but it could become considerably smaller. One leak claims the cutout could be around 35 per cent narrower than the one on the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple is also reportedly exploring ways to move some Face ID components beneath the display.
There is still disagreement among leak sources about whether Apple will actually introduce under-display Face ID with the iPhone 18 Pro. Some reports suggest a smaller Dynamic Island, while others point to a design with an even smaller cutout. So, while a completely notch-free iPhone may still be some distance away, the iPhone 18 Pro could take another step towards a cleaner-looking display.
4. Display changes?
The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to retain the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes, so this isn’t necessarily about getting a larger screen. Instead, Apple could focus on improving the panel itself. The Pro models are rumoured to use LTPO+ display technology, which could offer better power efficiency than the current LTPO panels. Apple is also reportedly asking suppliers to work on brighter displays.
A more efficient panel could be particularly useful when combined with the larger battery, potentially helping the iPhone 18 Pro deliver longer screen-on time without increasing battery drain.
5. Variable aperture will be big upgrade
This could be one of the most interesting camera upgrades in years. The iPhone 18 Pro models are rumoured to introduce a variable aperture on the main 48-megapixel camera. Apple’s recent Pro iPhones use a fixed aperture, meaning the lens opening cannot physically change depending on the shooting conditions.
A variable aperture would give the camera more control over how much light reaches the sensor. In darker conditions, the lens could open wider to capture more light. In brighter conditions, it could narrow the opening. It could also give photographers greater control over depth of field and background blur.
For people who actually use the iPhone as a camera rather than simply pointing and shooting, this could be a significant upgrade.
6. A new Samsung camera sensor
Apple has traditionally relied heavily on Sony for its iPhone image sensors, but reports suggest Samsung could enter the picture with a new three-layer stacked sensor. The technology is said to combine different layers of circuitry to improve responsiveness, reduce noise and increase dynamic range.
It is too early to know how much of a difference this will make in real-world photos, but a new sensor combined with Apple’s image processing could give the iPhone 18 Pro a meaningful camera advantage. This is especially interesting because the iPhone 17 Pro already moved all three rear cameras to 48 megapixels. The next generation may therefore focus more on improving the underlying camera hardware rather than simply increasing megapixel numbers.
7. Apple’s own C2 modem is coming
Apple has been steadily working towards reducing its reliance on Qualcomm for cellular modems, and the iPhone 18 Pro could be the next big step. The company’s C2 modem is said to succeed the C1 and could offer improvements in connectivity, power efficiency and 5G performance. There is some uncertainty over whether every market will get the same modem, with reports suggesting that US models could continue using Qualcomm hardware.
For buyers, the potential benefit is less about having an Apple-branded modem and more about tighter integration between the modem, processor and operating system. If Apple manages to improve cellular efficiency, it could also contribute to better overall battery life.
8. Satellite connectivity
Apple has already brought satellite-based features to recent iPhones, but these have largely focused on emergency and limited communication functions. The iPhone 18 Pro could take that technology considerably further. Reports suggest Apple is working towards satellite-based 5G connectivity, which could eventually allow an iPhone to access data without relying entirely on conventional mobile towers.
This is still one of the more uncertain rumours surrounding the phone, and availability would depend heavily on infrastructure and regional support. But if Apple delivers even part of what is being reported, satellite connectivity could become a much more practical feature on the next-generation Pro models.
9. iOS 27 and smarter Apple Intelligence features
Hardware is only half the story. The iPhone 18 Pro will launch with iOS 27, and Apple’s next software generation is expected to bring a more capable Siri and broader AI functionality.
Apple has been working on a more conversational Siri with features such as onscreen awareness, greater understanding of personal context and improved access to information. Other reported additions include an expanded Visual Intelligence experience and a standalone interface for interacting with Siri conversations.
The iPhone 18 Pro is also expected to have 12GB of RAM, which should give it enough headroom for Apple’s more demanding AI features. This could make the new Pro models more future-proof as Apple continues to expand its AI capabilities.
Should you wait for the iPhone 18 Pro or buy 17 Pro?
The iPhone 18 Pro does not appear to be a dramatic visual redesign. In fact, most of the leaked information suggests that Apple will retain much of the iPhone 17 Pro’s overall appearance, including the rear camera plateau and familiar screen sizes. But that does not mean the upgrade will be minor.
A 2nm A20 Pro chip, potentially longer battery life, a more efficient display, a smaller Dynamic Island, variable aperture and a new camera sensor could make the iPhone 18 Pro a considerably more capable phone underneath the familiar design. The big question is the price.
If Apple does raise the India price by as much as Rs 10,000 or Rs 20,000, buyers will have to decide whether these upgrades justify the premium. At that point, the iPhone 17 Pro could become a more attractive option if its price drops after the new models arrive.
For anyone already planning to spend flagship money, however, waiting until Apple’s September announcement could be the smarter move. Once the iPhone 18 Pro pricing and specifications are official, it will be much easier to decide whether the new model is worth buying or whether the outgoing generation offers better value.
